Causes of Cushing’s Disease

Cushing’s disease is caused by an excessive presence of cortisol in the blood of the dog. Cortisol is a hormone that is necessary to the proper functioning of the body to prepare for stressful situations.

Three causes can result in a disruption of the production of cortisol:

  • The pituitary gland is a small gland that transmits a request of cortisol in the body. It produces ACTH: a hormone that stimulates production of cortisol by the adrenal gland. If a tumor based on the pituitary, she starts to secrete too much ACTH. It is the most frequent cause: 85% of cases of Cushing’s disease.
  • The adrenal gland receives the message sent by the pituitary in the form of ACTH and produces cortisol. It is a small gland located near the kidneys. If there is a tumor, it produces cortisol continuously, regardless of the messages of the pituitary gland. It’s 10 to 15% of cases.
  • In case of too strong dose corticosteroids, it can develop Cushing’s disease. This case is the least concern: it is enough to stop treatment or to recalculate the doses.

A Dog with Cushing’s Disease Risk

Regardless of the causes of Cushing’s disease, symptoms can lead to complications in the term if they are not treated in time.

The body gets tired and we may see a sweet diabetes, pulmonary embolism, of kidney infections or infections of the urinary system repeatedly or finally an inflammation of the pancreas.

First, the veterinarian needs, in addition to the examination and a blood sample from classic, to confirm his diagnosis by passing the more accurate blood test to your dog.

These tests are useful and effective, but they ask that your pooch will arm of patience and spends the day at the clinic.

Once the diagnosis has been made, other tests are essential to understand the cause of disease: blood tests, urine tests, scan.

Indeed, in the case of tumor, surgery is still the most often proposed solution, but you have localized the tumour and identified possible metastases.

When the tumor is in the pituitary, the operation is complex and its efficiency drops. Your vet may offer a treatment with trilostane. This molecule does not cure the disease but can control the symptoms by blocking the synthesis of cortisol in the adrenal gland. It is a life-long treatment, quite heavy and which will require regular monitoring, particularly in the early days.

Some sites involve food and recommend a natural treatment and a change in food.
