We set off from the beach of Agios Georgios right in front of our front door, on the ancient Roman path we are accompanied by sea views and cypress trees. From afar we can see the Angelo Kastro castle, once a protective wall against pirates and conquerors. Surrounded by the sea, it stands on high cliffs, only a narrow footpath connects it to the mainland. Afterwards we visit an old olive wood carver in the village of Lakores.

Our guide Bettina, who grew up in Austria and then spent many years in New York, has found her new home on the Greek island. “After 13 years in America, nine million people were too much for me and I decided to move to the small mountain village of Afionas with my parents. Population: around 200, ”she smiles. A dog on each side, she explored the island for countless hours – and on this trip leads us mainly on coastal hikes, over sandy beaches and to secluded bays, where we can also swim. Or listen to the waves by the campfire in the evening.

Bettina Frauenhuber showed us one of her favorite hikes on the last day. In the morning we get fresh bread from the best white bread baker on the island, we then roll out the picnic blanket at an old chapel. Over dirt roads we come to a beach, above which a fantastically located café is enthroned. By boat we sail past stone formations back to Agios Georgios Bay. At the end we accompany Bettina to her home village Afionas, there we watch the sun as she seems to sink into the sea behind the Diapontian Islands.
