Flag of Armenia
The flag of Armenia, which was adopted in 1990, is composed of three horizontal stripes – red, dark blue and mustard yellow. It differs from the flag used until 1920 only in the aspect ratio. The colors used date back to the 2nd century – red is said to represent the blood spilled by Armenian soldiers, blue symbolizes the sky and hope, and orange represents the fertile soil and the population. Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity, it happened already in the 4th century. Historically, Armenia was part of several groupings, first the Roman, later the Byzantine, Arab, Persian and Ottoman empires. The last intervention in the state’s autonomy was the accession to the Soviet Union in the 20th century.
Armenia is a landlocked country in the Caucasus. It is located in the mountains between Georgia, Azerbaijan, the Iranian highlands and Turkey. See Armenia Location on World Map. The country corresponds to the north-eastern part of the formerly much larger Armenian settlement area and gained its independence with the dissolution of the USSR in 1991.
