Flag of Azerbaijan
The flag of Azerbaijan is composed of three horizontal stripes, of which the top is blue, the middle is red, and the bottom is green. In the center of the red stripe is a white crescent and an eight-pointed star. The star, crescent and green stripe are symbols of Islam. In addition, the eight points of the star represent the eight Turkic groups inhabiting Azerbaijan, and the crescent moon was borrowed from the Turkish flag. The symbolism of the colors used is as follows: the blue stripe represents the unity of all Turkic groups, the red is a symbol of progress and the struggle for freedom, and the green stripe refers to the Muslim religion. The flag was officially adopted in 1918, but was banned during Soviet rule. It was not used again until after independence in 1991.
Azerbaijan, on the west coast of the Caspian Sea, was the first of the then Soviet republics to declare itself independent. See Azerbaijan Location on World Map. The country’s oil wealth offers long-term potential for economic development.
Biggest Cities of Azerbaijan by Population
Azerbaijan is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is bordered by Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. The capital and largest city of Azerbaijan is Baku, located on the Caspian Sea coast. Baku has a population of over two million people and is known for its vibrant nightlife and modern architecture. Other major cities in Azerbaijan include Ganja, Sumqayit, Nakhchivan, Mingachevir, Lankaran, Shirvan, Yevlakh and Shaki.
Ganja is Azerbaijan’s second largest city with a population of over 300 thousand people. It was once an important trading post on the Silk Road between Europe and Asia and has been an important cultural center since its founding in 4th century BC. Ganja is home to some of Azerbaijan’s oldest mosques as well as many other historical monuments such as ancient towers, fortresses and caravanserais. Sumqayit is another large city in Azerbaijan with a population of around 300 thousand people. It was built in 1949 by Soviet authorities who wanted to create an industrial center near Baku for oil processing plants and other factories. Today it remains an important industrial center for Azerbaijan but it also serves as a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to both Baku and the Caspian Sea coast. Nakhchivan is another large city located on the border between Iran and Turkey with a population of around 250 thousand people. It serves as an important cultural center for Azerbaijani culture due to its many historical monuments such as mosques, palaces and fortifications that date back centuries before Christianity arrived in this region. Mingachevir is also an important city with a population of around 200 thousand people that serves as one of the main sources for hydroelectric power generation in the country due to its location near several rivers that flow through it into Lake Mingachevir which provides electricity for much of northern Azerbaijan.
