The Bahamas are located southeast of Florida and have a population of just over 300,000. The islands were a British colony until independence in 1973, and it was also in that year that the current Bahamian flag was adopted. After gaining independence, the economy became oriented towards tourism and trade, but at the same time, the drug trade began to flourish here, and a large part of the workforce emigrates to the US every year. The black wedge on the pole side of the flag is meant to represent the black population of the island, the blue stripes represent the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The yellow stripe is supposed to evoke rain, sand and the beautiful local beaches.

Bahamas: Nassau

The capital of the Bahamas is Nassau. It is located on the island of New Providence. Nassau has 260,000 inhabitants, making it by far the largest city in the country. Nassau was founded by British settlers as Charlestown. That was in 1656. This place was destroyed and rebuilt in 1687 as Nassau. The city was named in honor of the Dutch-British King Wilhelm III, who came from the House of Orange-Nassau. Pirates also settled in Nassau again and again and controlled the Bahamas from there from 1706. In 1718 they were then expelled. Since the 1950s, Nassau has been a vacation paradise, especially for tourists from the USA.
