Flag of Belgium
The Belgian flag, inspired by the French tricolor, was adopted in 1831 shortly after gaining independence from the Netherlands. The stripes were originally horizontal, but due to the excessive similarity with the flag of the Netherlands, a version with vertical stripes was eventually used. The colors red, yellow and red are characteristic of Brabant – the Brabant rebels wore these colors during the uprising against Austria in the late 18th century. The tricolor appeared for the second time during the rebellion against William I of the Netherlands. This uprising, unlike the previous one, ended successfully, so the flag evokes the struggle for independence and freedom.
Belgium is a federally organized parliamentary monarchy in Western Europe. It borders the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France and the North Sea.
French Walloons, Low German Flemings and West German Middle Franconia live together in the multi-ethnic state of Belgium. The remaining resident population consists of immigrants from many parts of Europe (especially from Poland and Italy), Morocco and the former colonial areas.
The country was often fought over in history and was occupied by Germany in both world wars. The introduction of a federal structure and the national consensus on the advantages of EU membership have somewhat eased the existing tensions between Flemings and Walloons.
The service sector dominates the Belgian economy with around 70%. Despite the great industrial tradition of the country, the manufacturing industry only represents around 15 percent of the gross domestic product. The most important branches of industry are the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries.
Belgium’s economy is deeply integrated into the world economy. Germany is one of Belgium’s most important economic partners, along with the Netherlands and France. Conversely, Belgium ranks 10th as a trading partner for Germany.
Biggest Cities of Belgium by Population
The largest cities in Belgium are Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Charleroi, and Liege. Brussels is the capital of Belgium and is located in the center of the country. It is home to over 1.2 million people and is one of the most diverse cities in Europe. The city is known for its art galleries, museums, cafes, and restaurants as well as its many international institutions like NATO headquarters and the European Parliament. Antwerp is a port city located on the banks of the Scheldt river. It has been an important trading hub since medieval times and it has grown into a vibrant city with a population of over 500 thousand people. The city has a rich cultural history with buildings from various eras including Flemish Renaissance architecture and Gothic churches. Ghent is another major Belgian city that lies on the Leie river in East Flanders province. It has a population of over 250 thousand people and is known for its cultural heritage sites like Gravensteen castle which dates back to 1180s as well as its many festivals throughout the year such as Gentse Feesten which takes place in July every year. Charleroi lies close to Brussels in Wallonia province and has around 200 thousand people living there according to 2020 census data. This industrial port town was founded in 1666 but it now also serves as an important cultural center offering visitors some interesting attractions including old churches dating back centuries ago along with modern shopping malls catering to tourists looking for unique souvenirs or gifts after their visit here. Finally Liege lies close to both Belgium-Luxembourg border near Germany border with around 200 thousand people living there according to 2020 census data. This beautiful old city dates back centuries ago when it served as an important trading hub for goods coming from France into Germany via this route making it an important economic center for many centuries now but today it’s also known for its many attractions such unique churches dating back centuries ago along with modern shopping malls catering to tourists looking for souvenirs or gifts after their visit here.
