Flag of Bulgaria

The Bulgarian flag, which was adopted in 1991, consists of a tricolor of horizontal stripes of white, green and red. It originally bore the Pan-Slavic colors, thus resembling the flag of Russia. However, the blue stripe was replaced by a green one in 1878 to better reflect the agricultural character of the country. The white stripe signifies peace, the green fertility of the Bulgarian soil and the red the courage of the Bulgarian population. Until 1990, the upper left part of the flag was still decorated with an emblem with the motif of a lion surrounded by ears of wheat, which were tied with a red ribbon with the dates 681 and 1944. In 681, the Bulgarian state was founded and in 1944 it was liberated from the Nazis. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the coat of arms was removed, leaving only three colored stripes.

Bulgaria is a republic in southeastern Europe. See Bulgaria Location on World Map. From 1396 to 1878 Bulgaria was under Turkish rule. From 1908 it was a kingdom, from 1947 to 1989 a communist people’s republic. Bulgaria has been independent of the Soviet system since 1989 and is moving closer to the West. However, economic and social reforms are making slow progress.

Tourism is an important economic indicator. Since the end of the nineties, especially mass tourism on the Black Sea coast has developed very strongly.
