Flag of Burkina Faso

The flag of Burkina Faso consists of two horizontal stripes in red and green and a gold star that is placed in the center of the flag at the border of the stripes. The colors used are a typical example of pan-African colors, but the official interpretation says that red symbolizes the socialist revolution and green the natural wealth of the country. Burkina Faso was a French colony until 1960 and was called Upper Volta. The flag was adopted in 1984, when the country was renamed Burkina Faso after a series of military coups, translating to “Land of the Incorruptible”. At the same time, the colors refer to solidarity with other African states, and the gold star is reminiscent of the guiding light of the revolution.
