Flag of Costa Rica

The flag of Costa Rica is composed of five horizontal stripes of blue, white, red, white and blue colors in a ratio of 1:1:2:1:1. In the left part of the red stripe, the national coat of arms from 1848 is usually still located, and in a rework from 1906. The coat of arms consists of a depiction of three Costa Rican volcanoes surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, on the surface of which a sailing ship floats. Above the volcanoes rises the sun of freedom, which dominates the sky along with seven five-pointed stars representing the seven provinces of Costa Rica. The coat of arms contains two more inscriptions – REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA and AMERICA CENTRAL. The red stripe was added to the flag only in 1848, and since then the flag has resembled the French tricolor and indirectly celebrates the French Revolution.

Flag of Costa Rica

Costa Rica (formerly also “Kostarika”) is a state in Central America.  In 1821 Costa Rica gained independence from the colonial power Spain. The history of Costa Rica is, by Central American standards, a story of success. Since the late 19th century, there have been only two brief periods of violence that undermined the country’s democratization. In 1948 Costa Rica abolished the military, has been neutral since then and uses the funds released for social and ecological purposes. Costa Rica is also called the “Switzerland of Central America”, not only because of the mountainous landscape, but also because of the relative prosperity.
