Flag of Denmark
The Danish flag, also called Danneborg (in Danish, “Danish cloth”), consists of a red background on which a white cross extends reaching to the edges of the flag. The vertical arm of the cross is placed closer to the pole, following the example of the flags of other Scandinavian countries. According to legend, the flag was sent down to help the Danish army from heaven on 15 June 1219 during the Battle of Lyndanis. It wasn’t long before King Valdemar II. would have lost the battle against the heathen Estonians, had it not been for a sign from the heavens that gave the army new energy, and the battle finally ended victoriously for the Danes. The flag is also used as a naval flag with the difference that it is square and has two pennants resembling a swallow’s tail.
The Kingdom of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy and a sovereign state. The national territory includes Denmark and the Faroe Islands, both of which are located in Northern Europe, and Greenland, which is part of North America. The Kingdom of Denmark is therefore an intercontinental state. See Denmark Location on World Map.
The autonomous regions of Greenland and the Faroe Islands fly their own flags, have their own official languages and belong to NATO, but not to the EU.
The motherland between Scandinavia and Central Europe covers an area of around 43,000 km², about a third of which is on the 405 islands.
Denmark has the only land border with Germany. A relatively strong Danish minority lives in the former Danish southern Schleswig. In Denmark, on the other hand, there is a German minority in the former German North Schleswig.
In February 2006, Denmark, which had hitherto been inconspicuous in terms of foreign policy, became the center of the world’s public eye due to the cartoon dispute.
