Flag of East Timor

The flag of East Timor is one of the younger flags, it was adopted in May 2002. It consists of a red sheet, in the left part of which there are two triangles – a longer yellow one and a narrower black one. In addition, a white five-pointed star is placed in the black triangle. The flag dates back to 1975, when Timor was freed from Portuguese rule. In the same year, however, Indonesia took control of the island and East Timor regained its independence only in 2002. The flag is inspired by the flag of the revolutionary Fretilin party, and the red color thus represents the blood shed during the revolution. The black color is meant to remind us of the colonial past, and the yellow triangle symbolizes hope for a better tomorrow. The white color of the star traditionally symbolizes peace and freedom.

Flag of East Timor

Timor-Leste (also known colloquially as East Timor, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste) is a country in Southeast Asia. It consists of the eastern half of the island of Timor, the exclave Oecusse in the western part and the islands of Atauro and Jaco. See East Timor Location on World Map. The state is roughly the size of Schleswig-Holstein and has a population of just over a million. As a Portuguese Timor, it was a colony for 500 years, then declared its independence on November 28, 1975. Just nine days later, Indonesia occupied the small neighboring state. Almost a fifth of the population died as a result of the 24-year occupation and guerrilla warfare. After a referendum and a last wave of violence, the international community intervened in 1999 and after three years of UN administration, East Timor became the first state in the 21st century to be declared on 20th.
