Flag of Ecuador

The flag of Ecuador, which was adopted in 1960, consists of three horizontal stripes of yellow, blue and red colors in a ratio of 2:1:1. Until 1833, Ecuador, together with Colombia, Panama and Venezuela, was part of the so-called Greater Colombia, and the colors of the flag of Ecuador thus refer to the colors of the flags of all the members of the former federation. Another interpretation says that the yellow and red refer to Spain and the blue to the ocean separating the country from Spain. The flag was said to have been designed by the leader of the resistance against Spanish rule, General Francisco de Miranda. The coat of arms in the middle of the flag, which is often omitted, however, depicts an Andean condor ready to fend off an enemy attack and protect the Ecuadorian nation under its wings.

Flag of Ecuador

Ecuador is located on the west coast of South America and used to be part of the heartland of the Incas. From 1533, when the last Inca ruler was executed, until independence in 1830, the country was a Spanish colony.

The country’s economic output is low and Ecuador is one of the poorer countries in Latin America. The decline of the national currency Sucre led to the introduction of the US dollar in 2000.
