Flag of France

The traditional French red-blue-white tricolor became a symbol of freedom during the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century. These colors adorned the cockades of the revolutionaries, and the tricolor as such was carried in 1789 at the storming of the Bastille, when political prisoners held by the monarchy were freed. This day is considered the beginning of the Great French Revolution, and the tricolor thus remained in the consciousness of the French associated with the establishment of the modern French Republic. All three stripes are displayed vertically on the flag and are of equal width. The blue stripe is located on the mast side of the flag, white in the middle and red on the right side.

France is the largest country in Europe in terms of area and looks back on an old and rich cultural history that radiated across Europe and, in the colonial era, also had an impact beyond. France was the first modern European republic and had the second largest colonial empire after Great Britain.
