Gambia is located in West Africa on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and its flag was adopted in 1965 when the country gained independence from Great Britain. The flag is composed of three horizontal stripes – red, blue and green from above. In addition, the stripes are separated by narrow white stripes. The blue stripe represents the Gambia River, which is the main river of the country. The red stripe symbolizes the sharp rays of the local sun, and the green stripe marks the earth. Another interpretation says that green is meant to resemble forests and red to savannah. The Gambia is the smallest country on the African continent and another interesting fact is that its only neighbor is Senegal.
