Flag of Greece

The Greek flag dates back to the anti-Turkish uprising of 1821, when a blue flag with a white cross was raised in opposition to the Ottoman crescent. In its present form, the flag was adopted in 1822. The cross was moved to the upper left and white and blue stripes were added. The nine stripes are probably meant to resemble the nine syllables of the revolutionary slogan “Eleftheria i Thanatos” (“Freedom or Death”). The blue color symbolizes the sea, whose beauty gave the Greeks the idea to rise. The white signifies the purity of their intentions, and the cross refers to respect for the Orthodox Church, which helped maintain national identity during the occupation.
