Flag of Greece

The Greek flag dates back to the anti-Turkish uprising of 1821, when a blue flag with a white cross was raised in opposition to the Ottoman crescent. In its present form, the flag was adopted in 1822. The cross was moved to the upper left and white and blue stripes were added. The nine stripes are probably meant to resemble the nine syllables of the revolutionary slogan “Eleftheria i Thanatos” (“Freedom or Death”). The blue color symbolizes the sea, whose beauty gave the Greeks the idea to rise. The white signifies the purity of their intentions, and the cross refers to respect for the Orthodox Church, which helped maintain national identity during the occupation. The shade of the blue color has changed many times, but still the flag can be called “Galanolefci” – blue and white in translation.

Flag of Greece

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe. It is the southernmost Balkan country and is surrounded by the Aegean, Ionian and Cretan Seas. The predominantly mountainous country includes over 2000 islands. For several years the Greek economy has been in a period of upheaval characterized by strong growth and modernization, the aim of which is to approach the European average. At the same time, the Greek economy is changing more and more from what was originally a strongly agricultural society to a trading and service society. Greece is a member of the EU and the euro zone.

Since 2010 at the latest, Greece has been noticed by the general public, primarily due to the Greek financial crisis. The Greek financial crisis is a budget and sovereign debt crisis of the Republic of Greece, which had developed in previous years, but until 2010 had been masked by various Greek governments with misrepresentations and reports about Greece’s economic data. Apart from Greece itself, the effects mainly affect the euro area of the European Union.

Greece: Athens

Athens is the capital of Greece. Most of the people live here and it is also the largest city in the country. The city center is not that big, but many other districts belong to the entire city district. Athens is also one of the oldest settlements in all of Europe.

Athens lies in the Attica landscape and is surrounded by foothills. Only the eastern side opens to the sea. The port of Athens is also located here. Due to this location, Athens has an exceptional climate. In summer it gets even hotter in Athens than in the rest of Greece. But in winter it can get cold and a blanket of snow covers the streets of the city.
