Guadeloupe (Guadeloupe Creole: Gwadloup ), also called Gwada by the locals, is geographically an archipelago, politically a French overseas territory, an overseas department and a region, consisting of a group of islands in the Lesser Antilles within the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean.
According to Abbreviation Finder, Guadeloupe is an (almost) fully integrated part of the French state and therefore also part of the European Union. However, Guadeloupe is not part of the EU VAT Union. Together with Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin , it forms the French Antilles.
Population
On January 1, 2017, Guadeloupe had 390,253 residents. Around 90% of Guadeloupians are of African or mixed descent. About 5% of the population are white. Indians, Lebanese or Chinese together make up less than 5%.
Several groups must be distinguished within the whites. The descendants of the colonial upper class are called Grands-Blancs . There are also some groups of impoverished white settlers ( Petits-Blancs): the Blancs-Matignons in the Grands Fund on Grande-Terre, the Saintois on the Les Saintes archipelago and the Désiradiens on the island of La Désirade.
The majority of the residents belong to the Catholic Church. There are minorities of Hindus, religions of African origin and Protestants.

Pointe-à-Pitre is situated on Guadeloupe’s west coast and is one of the island’s main ports for both cargo ships and cruise liners alike! The town has two main attractions: The Schoelcher Library and Pointe-à-Pitre Market! The Schoelcher Library was built by Victor Schoelcher who fought hard to abolish slavery in France’s colonies. It houses some rare books from all over the world as well as artifacts from local history. Pointe-à-Pitre Market offers an array of locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as freshly caught seafood that you can sample while you shop! There are also several shops selling local crafts such as handmade jewelry or traditional pottery pieces from Pointe-à Pitre artisans! Finally there are plenty restaurants serving up delicious local cuisine alongside international dishes so you can sample some truly unique flavors!
