Flag of India

The flag of India consists of three horizontal stripes – saffron orange, white and green. The symbolism of the colors is as follows: orange represents Hinduism or courage and sacrifice, green Islam and faith, and white represents the effort for peaceful coexistence of both religions. In the center of the white stripe is the motif of the sun with rays, or “wheels of the Law”, an ancient symbol of Brahmanism and the god Vishnu. This motif appeared as early as the 3rd century BC, but was not added to the flag until 1947, when India gained independence from Britain and when the former colony split into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. The wheel motif replaced Gandhi’s spinning wheel, which symbolized the country’s economic self-sufficiency.
