Flag of Jamaica
The flag of Jamaica was adopted in 1962 when the country became independent and broke free from British rule. Jamaica was a British colony for many centuries and at the same time a center of the slave trade. After the abolition of slavery in 1838, there was a violent coup in the country, and to this day Jamaica is characterized by social problems and a high level of crime. The appearance of the flag was chosen in a public competition and is intended to reflect Jamaica’s turbulent history. A version with horizontal stripes was rejected for being too similar to the flag of the then Republic of Tanganyika. The pan-African colors black, green and yellow were therefore placed in the St. Andrew’s cross and are supposed to express the motto: “There are difficulties, but the earth is green and the sun shines.” Yellow represents the sun, black trouble and green earth.
Jamaica is an independent island nation within the Commonwealth of Nations in the Caribbean. The island is south of Cuba and west of Haiti. It is the third largest island in the Greater Antilles. See Jamaica Location on World Map.
