Flag of Malawi
The current form of the flag of Malawi was approved in 1964. The flag is composed of three horizontal stripes – black, red and green. The symbol of the rising sun with 31 rays is placed in the black stripe. The black color is supposed to symbolize the people of the country, the red blood shed in the struggles to achieve the independence of African states, and the green represents the Malawian vegetation. The motif of the rising sun is meant to express hope after achieving independence, but also the meaning of the word malawi – the effect created over Lake Nyasa at sunset. The country’s national coat of arms is proud of the same motif. The flag was inspired by the flag of the Malawi Congress Party.
Malawi (Chichewa: Dziko la Malaŵi; English: Republic of Malawi) is a landlocked country in Southeast Africa. See Malawi Location on World Map. It is one of the poorest economies in the world. Malawi is an agricultural country with a dominant subsistence economy and the state as the most important economic actor.
The population is growing by around 2.8 percent annually. If this trend continues, the population will have doubled from around 18 million today in 25 years.
In regional comparison, Malawi is considered a relatively safe travel destination, but still has a high level of crime. Thefts and break-ins, often with massive use of force, have increased. This is especially true for the larger cities (Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Zomba) and the tourist destinations on Lake Malawi.
Biggest Cities of Malawi by Population
The largest city in Malawi is Blantyre. It is the commercial and financial hub of the country, and is home to more than one million people. The city has a long history, beginning with its founding in 1876 by David Livingstone. Blantyre is known for its colonial architecture, including the Mandala House, which was built in 1883 and is now a museum. The city also boasts several beautiful parks, such as Chichiri Nature Reserve and Botanic Gardens.
Lilongwe is the second-largest city in Malawi and the capital of the country. It has a population of around 800,000 people and features several modern amenities such as shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and banks. The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is also located here; it’s a popular tourist destination where visitors can observe animals like zebras, wildebeests, elephants, and giraffes in their natural habitat.
Mzuzu is another important city in Malawi; it’s located in the northern part of the country near Lake Malawi. This city has a population of around 200,000 people and serves as an important trading center for tea and coffee production in Malawi. Mzuzu also boasts some interesting attractions such as Mzuzu Cultural Museum which houses artifacts from different ethnic groups living in northern Malawi; there are also several parks where visitors can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or bird watching.
