Flag of Nepal

The unconventionally shaped flag of Nepal, which was adopted together with the Nepalese constitution in 1962, consists of two right-angled crimson triangles bordered by a blue stripe. This shape was created by combining two flags of rival branches of the Rana dynasty that once ruled the country. The upper triangle bears the white silhouette of the moon, which represents the royal family and its power. The lower triangle with the sun symbol represents the Ran family and political power. The combination of these two symbols is meant to represent the hope that Nepal’s independence will last as long as the sun and the moon exist. The flag’s jagged shape also evokes the peaks of the Himalayas. The red color in the background means energy.
