Flag of New Zealand
Just by the appearance of the flag of New Zealand, its colonial past is evident. The Union Jack in the top left corner, as well as the blue background of the flag, points to the historical ties to Great Britain. Four red stars bordered in white represent the Southern Cross constellation, which dominates the local sky. The same motif appears on the Australian flag, emphasizing the fact that the two countries are geographically close to each other in the Pacific Ocean. Officially, the color blue is an expression of the blue sea and clear sky around New Zealand. The flag was adopted on March 24, 1902, but it was designed as a naval flag as early as 1869.
New Zealand (English: New Zealand; maori: Aotearoa) is a geographically isolated island nation in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is located about 2,000 km southeast of Australia, a good 1,500 km south of New Caledonia and just under 3,000 km north of the Antarctic mainland. New Zealand consists of two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, as well as numerous smaller islands. The most important of these are Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands group. See New Zealand Location on World Map.
New Zealand cannot be clearly assigned to a particular continent, neither geographically nor culturally. The country lies partly on the Australian, partly on the Pacific plate, and most of its residents are rooted in two different cultural areas: the descendants of the mostly British colonists in Europe, the indigenous Maori as Polynesians in contrast in the oceanic culture.
New Zealand is part of the British Commonwealth. The Realm of New Zealand, which consists of five parts, includes New Zealand itself, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau and the Ross subsidiary area.
New Zealand is the state furthest away from Germany. New Zealand is in a seismically very active zone and weaker earthquakes are commonplace. Travelers should therefore familiarize themselves with the rules of conduct in the event of earthquakes and any resulting tsunamis. In New Zealand is considered left-hand traffic. The New Zealand government recommends that you consult the website – also in German – on road safety in New Zealand before starting your journey.
