Flag of Nicaragua
The flag of Nicaragua, which has been in use since 1908, is composed of three horizontal stripes in blue, white and blue. In the middle of the white stripe is the national emblem in the shape of a triangle. The emblem depicts five volcanoes, which are supposed to represent the five states of the former United Provinces of Central America – together with Nicaragua, it was Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador. A rainbow stretches above the volcanoes, and there is a Phrygian cap of liberty and white rays. The two blue stripes remind us of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, but also justice and loyalty, and the white color traditionally symbolizes purity and honesty. Similar symbolism can be found on the flags of El Salvador and Costa Rica.
The state of Nicaragua is located in Central America. It borders on Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, the Pacific to the west and the Caribbean to the east. Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the world. See Nicaragua Location on World Map.
