Flag of Niger
The flag of the African state of Niger, which was adopted a year before independence in 1959, consists of three horizontal stripes in orange, white and green. In addition, an orange circle is placed in the middle of the white stripe. The symbolism of the colors used is as follows: red represents the Sahara desert in the north, white purity and green hope and Nigerian vegetation in the south of the country. The orange circle is meant to resemble the sharp sun irradiating the local rivers and landscape. In addition, the three stripes represent the three main regions of the country. The colors of the flag may resemble the flag of Ivory Coast, which, like Niger, was colonized by the French.
Niger (Ger.: [ˈniːgər], French: [niˈʒɛːʀ]) is a country in West Africa. It borders Algeria and Libya to the north, Mali and Burkina Faso to the west, Chad to the east and Nigeria and Benin to the south. Niger is a landlocked country with shares in the Sahara, the Sahel and the Sudan and is one of the least developed countries in the world. See Niger Location on World Map. The former French colony has been independent since 1960. After a period of coups d’état and Tuareg uprisings, Niger appears to be stabilizing politically. Regular droughts and food shortages pose a threat to the livelihood of most of the Nigerian population.
