Flag of North Korea
The flag of North Korea, or the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, consists of a red sheet, the upper and lower edges of which are bordered by a blue stripe, which is also bordered by a white stripe on its inner side. Closer to the pole side of the flag is a white circle, which contains a red five-pointed star. The very appearance of the flag suggests that it is a communist country. The flag was adopted in 1948 after the departure of the USSR army from the country and is supposed to express the revolutionary ideas of the North Korean people and their leader Kim Il-sung. The color red is supposed to remind of bloodshed during the socialist revolution or patriotism, blue means peace and white purity and impeccability.
North Korea is a state in East Asia. In Germany and Austria the term Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is officially used, in Switzerland simply North Korea. See North Korea Location on World Map. North Korea itself prefers the translation Korean Democratic People’s Republic, established in the GDR at the time, and the abbreviation KDVR.
North Korea is one of the last remaining socialist states and seems to confirm the adage “lives said dead longer”. Since the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, North Korea has been predicted several times about its downfall. But so far the government in Pyongyang has been able to give the lie to all such predictions. Confronted with the loss of former allies and the country’s central role model (Kim Il-sung) as well as a gradually collapsing economy and recurring bottlenecks in the food supply, the government has understood it again and again, through calculated provocations and negotiations on the edge of the abyss a militant begging diplomacy combined with international appeals for aid to secure the survival of the state and, above all, their own.
Biggest Cities of North Korea by Population
North Korea is a country located in East Asia, with a population of roughly 25 million people. The largest city in North Korea is Pyongyang, the nation’s capital and the center of its political and cultural life. Home to over 3 million people, Pyongyang has long held an important place in North Korean history and is home to many of the nation’s most iconic landmarks such as the Juche Tower, Kim Il-sung Square and the Arch of Triumph.
The second largest city in North Korea is Hamhung, located on the eastern coast of North Korea with a population over 2 million people. Democratic People’s Republic of Korea: Pyongyang
In the capital, Pyongyang, you can find buildings such as the Great Study Palace of the People, the Pyongyang Great Theater and the Palace of Culture. All of them are large buildings based on traditional Korean architecture. In the large Mansudae monument there is the impressive bronze statue of the state founder and long-time leader Kim Il-sung. According to Abbreviation Finder, these were all built after the Korean War, in which almost the entire city was destroyed. Today the parks and green spaces in the city are very well maintained. Everything is organized, there is no hectic rush and a lot of cleanliness.
