Flag of San Marino

The flag of the tiny mountain state of San Marino consists of two horizontal stripes – white at the top and blue at the bottom. At the border of the stripes, in the center of the flag is the national coat of arms, which consists of a shield depicting three towers decorated with ostrich feathers on their tops. Three towers – Guita, Cesta and Montale, are the real dominants of the rock fortress of San Marino. There is also a golden crown above the shield, which is supposed to symbolize the independence and sovereignty of the country. Below the shield is a ribbon bearing the inscription “Libertas” (“Freedom”). San Marino is said to have been founded in 301 AD, making it the oldest republic in the world.

San Marino (Italian Repubblica di San Marino, nickname La Serenissima) is the oldest existing republic in the world with a history that supposedly goes back to the year 301. It is completely surrounded by Italy as an enclave and lies between the regions of Emilia-Romagna (Province of Rimini) and Marche (Province of Pesaro and Urbino), near the Adriatic coast near Rimini. The three fortresses Guaita, Cesta and Montale crown the Monte Titano ridge.

San Marino is not a city-state, but consists of nine municipalities. San Marino has about 30,000 residents, and another 13,300 San Marino citizens live abroad (mainly in Italy).

San Marino forms a customs union with the states of the European Union. Special rules also apply to economic relations with Italy, which are regulated by a large number of contracts.

San Marino has no natural resources. The state land is used primarily for agriculture and forestry. Until the 1960s, the San Marines lived primarily from agriculture, cattle breeding and the quarrying of stones from local quarries. Since then there has been a steady upswing in craft and trade in San Marino, but also in industry – not least due to the strong influx of tourists: around 2 million tourists visit the small republic every year.
