Flag of Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands lie east of New Guinea and west of the shores of Australia. The flag of the archipelago is composed of two fields – blue and green. Fields are separated from each other by a yellow diagonal bar. Five white five-pointed stars are placed in the upper left of the blue field. The islands were not colonized until the 19th century, but eventually came under British-German rule. In 1920, they came under Australian rule and became independent in 1977. A year later, the current national flag was adopted, where the stars represent the five territories of the island, the blue color represents the ocean, yellow the bright local sun and green the fertile land.
he Solomon Islands (also Solomon Islands) are an island state in the southwest of the Pacific, east of New Guinea. The Solomon Islands comprise a group of islands of volcanic origin, the largest of which are Guadalcanal (highest point Mount Popomanaseu at 2,335 meters), Santa Isabel, Makira, Malaita, New Georgia and Choiseul, and an estimated 992 smaller islands and atolls. See Solomon Islands Location on World Map.
The island of Guadalcanal became famous for the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II, in which Japanese and US troops fought fierce battles. The Battle of Guadalcanal was one of the longest and most bitter in American military history.
With their victory on Guadalcanal, the Americans were finally able to secure the sea route between Australia and America. Guadalcanal thus became an important starting point for further operations.
The Solomon Islands are one of the poorest states in Oceania. The greatest weakness of the economy is the infrastructure, which was largely destroyed by the ethnic conflicts in 1998. The economic strengths of the Solomon Islands are its large mineral deposits and agricultural resources.
An important branch of the economy is tourism, especially diving and fishing tourism. The tourists used to come because of the importance of Guadalcanal during World War II and the tranquility of the outer islands. Due to the ethnic conflicts in 1998 and warnings about entry, tourism almost came to a standstill and is only recovering with difficulty due to a lack of funds.
