Flag of the Republic of South Africa

The flag of the Republic of South Africa was adopted after the first elections and the end of apartheid in 1994. The symbolism of the flag and the letter “Y”, which stretches from the left to the right side of the flag, is also related to this. It signifies an effort to bring together groups separated for many years and their common future without conflicts. The many colors on the flag signify the plurality of political and ethnic groups in the country, which is why the flag is sometimes nicknamed the “rainbow flag”. As on the flag of the African National Congress, three of these colors are black, green and yellow. Red, white and blue represent the Boer republics and the colors of the Zulu party are also included.

The Republic of South Africa is a state at the southern tip of Africa. The country with the capital Pretoria is between 22 and 35 degrees south latitude and 17 and 33 degrees east longitude. The country is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south and southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. In the north are the neighboring countries Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, to the east of them Mozambique and Swaziland.

South Africa is an ethnically very mixed country, home to people of all skin colors and which is often referred to as the rainbow nation because of this diversity. Since the different ethnic groups did not always live side by side without conflict, ethnic problems and unrest between the white minority and the black majority dominated the history and politics of the country.

South Africa is also one of the few countries in Africa that has never had a coup.

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and the second most populous city in the country. The city also has some great restaurants serving traditional South African cuisine such as bobotie (curried mince) and boerewors (spicy sausage). Additionally, there are several markets selling local goods including clothing, jewelry, spices, and handicrafts made by locals from around Cape Town.

Durban is third largest city in South Africa with a population of around 3 million people. It is located on the eastern coast of South Africa near Mozambique’s border. Durban offers visitors plenty to do including exploring its markets where they can buy local goods such as textiles, jewelry and spices as well as visiting historical sites like Fort Nongqayi which dates back to 1824! The city also has some great restaurants serving traditional Zulu cuisine such as umngqusho (samp & beans) and ujeqe (tripe stew).
