Flag of Uzbekistan
The flag of Uzbekistan, which was adopted in 1991, consists of three horizontal stripes of blue, white and green colors. The individual stripes are separated from each other by narrow red stripes, and in the left part of the upper blue stripe there is a white crescent and twelve five-pointed stars. Uzbekistan was the first country to adopt a new flag after the collapse of the USSR, confirming the country’s sovereignty. The blue color is typical of the color of Timur, the ancient Uzbek ruler, white means peace and green symbolizes the greenery of the local landscape. Red is supposed to evoke vitality, the crescent moon traditionally signifies the Muslim faith of the population, and the twelve stars represent all the months of the Islamic calendar.

In the 1990s there were repeated nationality conflicts in the Fergana Valley in the east of the country and conflicts with Islamic fundamentalists.
