According to countryaah, Wallis and Futuna is a French overseas territory (Territoires d’outre-mer, TOM) northeast of Fiji. France declared the islands a protected area in 1842 and occupied them in 1888. In 1959, the population voted for the status of an overseas territory for France and thus for partial autonomy.

Biggest Cities of Wallis and Futuna by Population
The two largest cities in Wallis and Futuna are Mata-Utu and Leava. Mata-Utu is the capital of the French Overseas Collectivity and has a population of around 2,000 people. It is located on the island of Uvea, which is one of the three main islands in Wallis and Futuna. The city has a number of attractions, including the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady Assumption, which was built in 1845 and is an impressive structure with its bell tower reaching a height of 40 meters. The city also houses a market where local produce can be purchased as well as souvenirs for visitors to take home with them. Leava is located on the island of Futuna, which is located to the east of Uvea. The population here is around 1,500 people and it has a number of attractions too including its own cathedral which was built in 1954 called Notre Dame de l’Assomption de Leava. There are also several restaurants here where visitors can sample some traditional Polynesian dishes such as fish cooked with coconut milk or grilled pork marinated in lime juice. For shopping there are several stores selling local arts and crafts as well as imported items from France or other Pacific countries. Finally, there are several beaches nearby where visitors can relax on white sand under palm trees or take part in some exciting water sports activities such as snorkeling or kayaking.
