Flag of Hungary

The flag of Hungary consists of three horizontal stripes – red, white and green. In its current form, it first appeared in 1848, when there was an uprising against Austro-Hungarian rule. Its design is supposed to refer to the French tricolor, which symbolizes freedom. However, we can find the origin of the flag in much older times. Commander Arpád adopted the red flag as his standard already in the 9th century. With the advent of Christianity, a cross on a white background was added to red. The green color added to the flag only in the 16th century. Since then, all the national colors as we know them today have been represented on the flag, where red stands for strength, white for faith and the oldest green for hope.

Hungary lies on the northern flank of Southeast Europe in Central Europe. Hungary used to be a cosmopolitan cultural center and even during the communist era Hungary was one of the more open countries and people were better off than in other countries of the Eastern Bloc. Hungary played a decisive role in the political change in 1989 in the Eastern Bloc countries. Since the collapse of the USSR, Hungary has been strongly oriented towards the West, which is evident from joining NATO in 1999 and, above all, joining the European Union on May 1, 2004 as part of the EU’s eastward expansion.

Hungary is a landlocked nation in Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania and Croatia. Its capital city is Budapest which is one of the largest cities in the country and home to more than 1.7 million people.

Budapest is divided into two distinct areas: Buda on the west bank of the Danube River and Pest on the east bank. The two parts are connected by eight bridges and visitors can explore sights such as the iconic Chain Bridge or visit Gellert Hill for panoramic views across the city.

Other major cities in Hungary include Debrecen which is known as the ‘Calvinist Rome’ for its large Calvinist population; Szeged which is renowned for its vibrant summer festivals; or Miskolc which is a popular student town with a lively nightlife scene.

Hungary also contains some smaller towns such as Sopron located near Austria’s border; Eger known for its UNESCO-listed castle; or Esztergom located on the banks of the Danube River with its impressive basilica.

Throughout Hungary there are plenty of attractions to explore including thermal baths, castles, medieval towns, national parks and nature reserves. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as hiking or cycling along trails through forests and vineyards or take part in water sports on Lake Balaton.
