Flag of Chile

The flag of Chile bears the colors of the flag of the United States of America and dates back to the period of the liberation struggles of 1817. The flag is composed of a red and white horizontal stripe and a blue square with a white five-pointed star at the top of the pole. White, like the name of the country itself (Tchili means snow in the local language), is meant to symbolize the snowy peaks of the Andes. The blue represents the sky under which the blood of the locals was shed during the struggle for independence. The red stripe is supposed to remind of these fights. The origin of the star is connected with the Chilean Indians – its white color is said to mean the unity and freedom of the nation, and the five points represent the five original provinces of the country.

Chile is a state in southwestern South America, which extends as a narrow strip over 5350 km along the Pacific coast in north-south direction between the latitudes 17 ° 3 ‘S and 56 ° 30’ S. The Chilean Andes form one of the highest mountain ranges in the world and have a multitude of peaks over 6,000 m.

Easter Island (Rapa Nui) in the Pacific is also part of the national territory. Chile also claims part of the Antarctic.
In 1989 Chile returned to democracy after years of military dictatorship.

The Chilean economy showed above-average growth rates between 1988 and 1998. The 1997/98 Asian and Brazilian crises led to a recession, but since 2000 the economy has been growing again with types of growth of between 2.5 percent and 6 percent. In the annual corruption index of Transparency International, Chile permanently occupies one of the top places, is therefore considered to be relatively free of corruption and thus also leaves European countries such as Belgium, France and Spain behind.

Chile: Santiago de Chile

The capital of Chile is Santiago de Chile. It is located in the middle of the country between the Andes and the mountains of the coast and thus in a valley. More than 6 million people live here, that’s a third of all Chile’s inhabitants! With lots of factories and traffic, the air is pretty bad. The location in the valley means that the air is not exchanged. So there is often smog .
