El Salvador is based on the principles of the market economy.

Flag of El Salvador

The flag of El Salvador is composed of three horizontal stripes, the outermost two of which are dark blue and the middle one is white. These colors are typical of the states of the former United Provinces of Central America, of which El Salvador was a member along with Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The two blue stripes represent the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean surrounding El Salvador, and the white stripe symbolizes peace. In the middle of the white stripe is the national emblem of El Salvador, which uses a triangle to mark the three pillars of the republic – executive, legislative and judicial power. There are also five volcanoes and a red cap, which is meant to commemorate the abolition of slavery. The five blue banners represent the five former members of the province, and the fourteen parts of the laurel wreath mark the individual states.
