Flag of Guatemala

The flag of Guatemala, which has been used in its current form since 1871, consists of three vertical stripes in blue, white and blue. In the middle of the white stripe is the national emblem, also from 1871, on which is depicted the national ask kvesal crested clutching a scroll with the inscription “LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821” – on this day Guatemala was freed from Spanish rule. The coat of arms is bordered by a wreath and two rifles, which are meant to commemorate the guerrilla war that ended in 1996. The colors blue and white are common to all Central American states. The two blue stripes represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, but also independence, and the white color symbolizes peace.

Flag of Guatemala

Guatemala is a state in Central America, in the south of the Yucatán Peninsula. The country has two coasts, in the east a narrow access to the Gulf of Honduras, part of the Caribbean Sea, and in the south-west the Pacific coast. Guatemala is the most populous state in Central America and at the same time one of the poorest countries in the world. Guatemala’s economy is shaped by the close involvement of large companies with politics and the military. Remittances from Guatemalans who have emigrated to their families are of great importance. In the United States alone, 1.6 million Guatemalans are believed to be illegal immigrants.

Guatemala: Guatemala City

Guatemala City is located in the highlands, in the southern part of the country. 1.125 million people live here. The place was already 800 BC settled by the Maya .

Earthquakes repeatedly destroyed the city, which was particularly strong in 1976. In the old town you can only find low houses, since after the earthquake in 1918 only two-story buildings could be built.

In 2007 and 2010, large holes suddenly opened in the ground, swallowing people and buildings. It has not been clarified whether it is a question of intrusions in the sewer system or undersinking.
