Flag of Gabon
The current flag of Gabon was adopted in 1960 when the country declared independence from France. It is composed of three horizontal stripes from the top in green, yellow and blue. The flag is meant to express solidarity with other independent African states – the first two stripes were taken from the flag of Ethiopia, but also to point to the former association with France as the colonizer of Gabon (blue stripe). The green stripe symbolizes the Gabonese forests and timber industry, the yellow the bright local sun and the zero parallel that runs through the country. The blue stripe represents the Atlantic Ocean, which washes the west coast of the country, and all the water of the country, especially the Ogooué River.
Gabon is located in central Africa. It was a French colony until 1960. Ruled by autocratic presidents since independence, Gabon introduced a multi-party system in the 1990s and passed a new constitution, which enabled reform of government organizations and more transparent elections.
Gabon is one of the most resource-rich countries in Africa, with considerable oil reserves off the coast.
