Flag of Vietnam

The Vietnamese flag carries the colors very popular in this part of the world – red and yellow. Red is used as the background of the leaf and yellow fills the five-pointed star in the middle of the flag. The shape of the flag refers to Vietnam’s communist past and is also meant to symbolize the struggle against the French. Each of the points of the star represents individual groups of the population that contributed to the building of socialist Vietnam – peasants, workers, intellectuals, youth and soldiers. The star is meant to symbolize national unity, which is a very important concept for a country that has gone through so much turbulence. By 1975, Vietnam was divided into northern and southern parts, with North Vietnam supported by China and the USSR and South Vietnam favored by the US. After the end of the Vietnam War, the two countries were reunited.

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a state in Southeast Asia. It borders China, Laos, Cambodia and the South China Sea. Vietnam was divided after World War II and only reunited in 1975 when the communist north had defeated the south and its US allies. After decades of wars and a communist planned economy, Vietnam is now one of the poorest countries in Asia. In the one-party state of Vietnam, the Communist Party has pursued a liberal economic policy since 1986, which is known as doi moi (renewal). Since then, the country has been catching up economically.
