Flag of Austria

The Austrian flag is considered one of the oldest flags ever. It consists of three equally wide horizontal stripes – a white one in the middle and two red ones at the top and bottom of the flag. According to legend, in 1191 Duke Leopold V of Babenberg fought so valiantly in the crusade for the Holy Land in the Battle of Acre that he did not even notice during the fight that his originally white shirt was covered in blood. After the battle was over, he realized that he had lost his standard, so he decided to hang up his stained smock instead. As he took off his sword sheath belt, a white pristine stripe appeared on his shirt. In the 13th century, the last Babenberg duke adopted red and white as his colors to express admiration and respect for his valiant predecessor.
